AFTERCARE
1. Monitor the Tattoo: A tattoos normal healing course includes a peeling phase. This is a phase of skin regrowth after the trauma from the needle. as those new skin cells come in, it will cause the tattoo to itch. Refrain from itching with your nails. Regularly check the tattoo for any signs of issues. This may look like redness and swelling. If you notice any concerning changes, such as increased redness, swelling, or a rash, contact your tattoo artist for advice. They can provide guidance.
2. Follow Up: If you experience any concerns during the healing process, such as excessive redness, swelling, or unusual discharge, it's important to take action. These symptoms could indicate an infection or other issues that need attention. Reach out to your tattoo artist first, as they can provide specific advice based on their knowledge of your tattoo and healing progress. If the symptoms persist or worsen, or if you have significant concerns about the health of your skin, consult a healthcare provider. They can assess your condition and recommend appropriate treatment to ensure your tattoo heals properly and to address any potential complications.
3. Clean the Tattoo: After removing the initial Saniderm bandage, gently wash the tattoo using a mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water. Use your fingertips to lightly cleanse the area, avoiding any scrubbing or harsh rubbing, which could irritate the skin. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residues, as leftover soap can cause irritation. After washing, gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel or a soft, disposable tissue—avoid using cloth towels as they may harbor bacteria or lint. Ensure the tattoo is completely dry before applying a very thin layer of aquaphor or A&D ointment. Continue to keep the tattoo clean and moisturized throughout the healing process, applying the moisturizer as needed to prevent dryness and keep the skin hydrated. Avoid using products with strong fragrances, alcohol, or other irritants that could affect the healing skin.
5. Avoid Excess Moisture: Excess moisture can disrupt the healing and potentially lead to complications. Avoid submerging the tattoo in water for extended periods, such as during swimming, baths, or long showers. If you need to shower, try to keep the tattooed area out of direct water flow as much as possible. Additionally, be mindful of activities that could cause sweating or excessive humidity, as these can also affect the healing process.
4. Keep the Initial Bandage On: Leave the first Saniderm bandage that your tattoo artist applies on your tattoo for 4-5 days. This initial bandage acts as a protective barrier, keeping the tattoo clean and shielded from bacteria. Avoid removing it prematurely to ensure proper healing and to minimize the risk of infection. If the bandage becomes excessively saturated or starts to peel off on its own, contact your tattoo artist for guidance.
